Blog: Professional Hopes and Goals

One hope that you have when you think about working with children and families who come from diverse backgrounds (any format and any length)

Over the past few weeks I have learned a lot about diversity, equity, and social justice. One hope that I have when it comes to working with children and families is that the families begin served are given an equal education. I hope that educators all over the world realize their own biases and then gain further understanding of diversity and equity so that we can better serve all children and families. By continuing education it will allow us to better serve the children and the families that we may encounter on our jobs. Having experience of being treated differently from white students by teachers and seeing teachers not care about black males that are falling behind in school it makes me hope that teachers now are seriously being looked at when they are being hired for jobs as educators regardless of if its daycare, private schools, public schools or universities. Everyone should be treated equally when it comes to receiving an education the color of your skin and where you come form should not determine the type of education that you receive.

One goal you would like to set for the early childhood field related to issues of diversity, equity, and social justice (any format and any length)

One goal that I would like to set for the early childhood field in relations to issues of diversity, equity, and social justice is that anyone working in the early childhood field be required to take at least one course a year to keep them up to date about the current issues that the early childhood field is facing in regards to diversity, equity, and social justice. I believe that continuing your education on these issues is the best way to try and promote change across the board. Having knowledge and gaining knowledge from others experiences will allow for educators to seek deep understanding of the things that are happening to children and families from diverse backgrounds.

A brief note of thanks to your colleagues
I just want to take the opportunity to tahnk everyone in the class for sharing their personal experiences with me and for giving me advice and help on the different topics that we have discussed throughout this course. All of you alls postings and feedback has given a better understanding of diversity, equity and social justice. Sharing your personal experiences has allowed me to look back at the way my classroom evironment is and given me insight on how I can develope better relationships with both the children and families. I greatly apprecitate all that you have done throuhout this course. I whish everyone the best as you continue on completing you masters.

Best wishes and be Blessed

I love your goal. It think a lot of teachers would benefit from it while others would attend and not pay attention. Some people are just set in their ways and don't want to do better. I know a few people that I work with like that right now. It was nice to read about everyone's experiences because I'm not in the field yet and every little thing helps prepare me for the future. Good luck on the rest of our classes.

It is hard when you realize you are being treated differently from others. I have a boss that treats only the ones she decides she likes nicely and the others she just treats like crap. It makes the business terrible to work in because she isn't professional at all.

Chawanda,
"Everyone should be treated equally when it comes to receiving an education the color of your skin and where you come form should not determine the type of education that you receive;" such a powerful statement, makes me think of Martin Luther king Jr"s I have a dream speech. The education field is a life long learning journey, so we must have the desire to learn more, to know more, to ask questions in order to be better and change what needs to be changed.I enjoyed reading your post! Best of luck on your journey!
